The Coach House Swiss Restaurant in Mealsgate is located in a beautiful red sandstone Coach House built in 1861 by George Moore. It is a Grade II Listed Building which was once part of George Moore's larger Whitehall Estate. Now the Coach House and the neighbouring 14th CenturyPele Tower are all that survive of that estate. The restaurant is surrounded by picturesque woodland and countryside and is accessed by a long Rhododendron lined driveway which leads of the main Carlisle to Cockermouth road (A595). The restaurant itself has an excellent reputation throughout the Lake District and Cumbria for good food from traditional Lakeland dishes to those with a strong Swiss influence, such as fondue and roesti. Ueli, the owner and head chef, was born in Switzerland and spent many years working the major Swiss Alps hotels in Geneva, Zermatt and Lucerne, before moving to the UK and working locally at the Keswick Hotel and the Lodore Swiss Hotel in Borrowdale. Then in 1984, he founded the Coach House Restaurant in Mealsgate with his wife Audrey and they have never looked back. Menus are interesting and varied. Dishes make full use of seasonal and local produce and are freshly prepared in the gleaming kitchen. An ever growing number of regular diners together with local recommendations are testament to the kitchen team's abilities. Vegetarians are also well catered for with a selection of vegetarian options available on the Menu. Located just off the A595 between Cockermouth and Carlisle, on the edge of the Lake District National Park, the Coach House Swiss Restaurant is the perfect venue for an intimate evening for two or a night out with friends. Whatever the occasion, you will not be disappointed. |
